I have posted Fowler Ware pudding bowls before; I do love them [and not just because they are good for making christmas puddings!]- the colours are fantastic and they look great in the kitchen holding fruit, eggs and take-away menus.

A complete set of 5 pudding bowls were made to be ‘nested’ and were always different colours. The three on display here represent the middle three sizes: the smallest and the largest bowls are missing. All three bowls are stamped with Fowler Ware Australia – and the colours, though made in the 40s presaged the 50s.

Monochrome pudding bowls [sold]

This set is a monochrome collection of pudding bowls- in a creamy, off-white. Collecting in a single colour is quite dramatic, and these bowls look fantastic in a white or neutral toned kitchen. I was inspired by a friend who has about 15 off-white bowls sitting on the top of her kitchen cupboards- in that space below the ceiling.

The larger bowl is by Bakewells, which operated out of Bexley in Sydney. The three medium sized bowls are part of the Fowler Ware ‘Utility’ range – perhaps off-white wasn’t as glamorous as the coloured bowls [see post below] and could be used every day.

The beauty of the off-white bowl is that any fruit/food/kitchen implement stored in them looks fantastic. And as mentioned in the previous post- the bowls are still great for…cooking puddings!

Fowler Ware created industrial pottery in Glebe, Sydney commencing in the 1840s. After WWII, Fowler Ware moved to producing pottery for the domestic market : their pudding bowls were so popular that they opened a second pottery to cope with the demand.

This image shows the range of colours and sizes the pudding bowls were made in [although I haven’t included the largest size, or the off-white coloured bowls, the subject of the next post.] The bowls and are still fit for purpose : I received a lovely christmas pudding made in one of these bowls- and after eating the pudding – I got to keep the bowl!

This is some more of my Fowler Ware collection. You might remember that Fowler Ware originally started producing industrial pottery [think toilet bowls, basins and ceramic pipes] in Glebe, Sydney commencing in the 1840s. After WWII, Fowler Ware moved to producing pottery for the domestic market : and their pudding bowls were so popular that they opened a second pottery to cope with the demand.

These three bowls ‘nest’ one inside the other and they are beautiful 50s colours. They are still good for pudding making- as I can attest personally, having consumed many fine puddings [but not made, alas – my skills don’t extend to pudding making.] The jug is of the same vintage…and makes a nice colour contribution to the trio of bowls.
