Poole is a very well known pottery, which started operating in Dorset, England in 1873 – and continues today. I am particularly fond of the pottery produced between the 30s and 60s.

Poole is well known for its ‘Twintone’ pottery– their expression – a simple, stylish contrast of two colours. These three pieces are from the twintone series C104: sky blue & dove grey.

I have featured Poole before, and other twintone colourways – the elegant 50s and 60s styling and the deep pastel colours and very beautiful. Poole is very collectable, and there are many websites devoted to it’s fandom.

Egg cups by Poole

Poole is a very well-known pottery; it started operating in Dorset, England in 1873 – and continues today. All Poole is now highly collectible- but I am particularly fond of the pottery produced between the 30s and 60s.

This Poole egg cup set is in the twintone colourway [THEIR term] ‘Seagull and Teal’. The teal makes for a nice connection with the tea caddy. The ’seagull’ is a lovely mottled pinky-creamy-colour. The five piece set is in excellent condition; the plate under the egg cups has circular indentations to help steady the cups.

Bushells tea caddies, tin and mass produced to mark commemorative occasions, are now quite sought after. Here we have her Maj, Prince Philip and both countries’ flags to mark Elizabeth’s coronation in 1953. This caddy has now sold.

Blue Moon

Poole is a very well known pottery, which started operating in Dorset, England in 1873 – and continues today. I am particularly fond of the pottery produced between the 30s and 60s.

These tea cups – very modern in shape and sans handle – are part of the Cameo range. The colour is ‘Blue Moon’ –a deep blue exterior, with a slightly off-white interior [pure white would be too stark…this off-white is just right.] The set of eight tea cups and saucers have the traditional mid-century Poole mark on each piece.

The cups don’t hold much tea – not that I have used them as such – the lovely colour and repetition of form has had them serve a purely decorative function. But they would make for a lovely tea party.

50s Poole vase

Poole ‘Wave’ vase
made in England 1950s

An experiment in styling: a beautiful 50s ‘wave’ vase by Poole with a reproduction glass vase. The old and the new together; ceramic and glass. And pink tulips; a gift from my partner.

The twintone Poole vase was designed by Alfred Read in the 50s – as part of Poole’s ‘Freedom’ range. This range saw asymmetric forms created in the same colour range as existing pieces – so one could introduce a bit of funkiness without going completely crazy. A little bit of modernism could creep into your conservative tea service!

This vase is stamped C97 which indicates a vase in the ‘peach bloom’ [pink interior] and ‘seagull’ [mottled grey exterior] colouring. I have other examples of this ‘twintone’ [Poole’s descriptor] – tea cups and saucers – elsewhere on my blog. The pastel shades of the powder pink and muted grey are such classic 50s colours – but I love how this free-form shape starts to anticipate the 60s.

Following on from my last post, here is another set of mid-century Poole teacups.

Poole is a celebrated pottery operating from Dorset, England from 1873 – and continuing until today. I am particularly fond of the pottery produced between the 1930s and 1960s.

These tea cups – very modern in shape and sans handle – are part of the Cameo range. The colour is ‘Blue Moon’ –a deep blue exterior, with a slightly off-white interior [pure white would be too stark…this off-white is just right.] The set of eight tea cups and saucers have the traditional mid-century Poole mark on each piece.

The cups don’t hold much tea – perhaps they were for a Japanese tea ceremony- which would certainly align with the blue moon theme. Either way, the set of eight cups and saucers are delicious.

Poole ‘Peach Bloom’ tea cups [sold]

Further to my post [down below] of Poole ‘Blue Moon’ tea cups, here are six beauties in the colourway ‘Peach Bloom and Seagull’ [I’m guessing peach is the cup interior, and seagull the exterior… it’s a lovely mottled grey colour.] This colourway was presented in the early 50s and is denoted on the base of the cups/saucers as ‘C99.’

Poole is well known for its ‘Twintone’ pottery– their expression – a simple, stylish contrast of two colours.

You’ll note these cups have handles, but they are the same, small delicate shape and size as the Blue Moons. You don’t get much tea in them, but they are so elegant – they would make any tea party a sophisticated affair.
