I am a huge Kathie Winkle fan: she produced over one hundred patterns for Broadhurst between 1958 and 1975. During this period, Kathie Winkie produced ironstone china with silkscreen printed decorations, with a hand-painted underglaze.

[So far on my blog: I have examples of: ‘michelle’, ‘calypso’, ‘corinth’, ‘kontiki’, ’newlyn’, ‘rushstone’, ‘electra’, ‘kimberley’, ‘taskent’, and ‘renaissance’.] I am becoming a kathie winkle nerd.

AND- while my family collected the ‘Rushstone’ pattern [c. 1960], my partner’s collected ‘Calypso’- produced in 1963.

So – this is a Calypso collection: a large oval platter, four side plates, four bowls, and four condiment bowls. Don’t you love how the condiment bowls extracted the dominant motif from the main design? These are probably my favourite part of the collection.

Swinging 60s

Arabia ‘Kosmos’ espresso cups

Arabia pottery is uber collectble right now: here we have Kosmos, designed by Gunvor Olin-Gronquist [or GOG, as noted on the backstamp.] Kosmos dinner service sets were made between 1962 and 1976; these are espresso cups, for that perfect morning cuppa.

Also featuring in the image- Kathie Winkle for Broadhurst pottery- a ‘Calypso’ platter. This was made in 1963; Kathie Winkle was so prolific in producing different designs [over one hundred] in the 60s that each design was made for less than a year. The transfer stencil outline has been hand-painted, and then over-glazed, so no two pieces are exactly the same.

However, these new releases are not handpainted, don’t have wonky registration of the transfer patterns, and look too – new and perfect. I much prefer the originals, and take great satisfaction from collecting them in the ‘wild’. So far, I have: Corinth [1967] Calypso [1963] Newlyn [1963] Tashkent, Kontiki [1965] Renaissance, Electra, Rushstone [1965] Michelle [1968] – and – Kimberley [1973.]

This is a fabulously large platter, ‘Calypso’. It was the pattern that my partner grew up with, in the 60s. I think she is starting to embrace it again- meanwhile- I think I love it anew.

This tea set of tea cups and cake plates has a handpainted underglaze [the pattern] but is detergent and dishwasher proof. So it’s beautiful and functional! But being handpainted means that no two sets are the same.

Continuing my love affair with Kathie Winkle – the lead designer at Broadhurst in the 60s- here is another of her designs: Michelle. Kathie Winkle designs are very collectible right now – and indeed are currently being re-released. Winkle designed over 140 patterns- all very groovy and typical of the 60s.

These plates have a handpainted underglaze [the green and orange colourings] which makes every plate unique – BUT are they are also detergent and dishwasher proof. So they’re beautiful and functional! Imagine a whole wall of funky 60s plates…if they were easily detachable you could store your entire dinner service that way!

Kathie Winkle produced over a hundred designs…so I am just scratching the surface.

BUT- now that Kathie Winkle is re-issuing the most popular designs of the 60s – in this next century- with all that new technology affords…

Here is another plate by Kathie Winkle Design ‘Tashken’t [very collectible right now]- it is stoneware with a handpainted underglaze [the pattern] but is detergent and dishwasher proof. So far I have collected – and featured on this blog- three other designs by Kathie Winkle [of over one hundred produced] – Calypso, Kontiki and Newlyn.

Imagine a whole wall of Kathie Winkle patterns…if they were easily detachable you could store your entire dinner service in this way! Form AND function- the ultimate 60s ideal.

Kathie Winkle’s patterned plates have become so collectible that Kathie herself is re-releasing thirty of the most popular design [see her Facebook page.] For my money, though- it’s the original pieces that are the best to collect- they have typical 60s and 70s colourings and being painted by hand, they are all unique. The re-released patterns have a uniformity produced by modern methods and lack the individuality of the originals.

60s Funky!

Kathie Winkle plates

Kathie Winkle started work at Broadhurst & Sons- a major Straffordshire pottery- in 1950 as a painter: by 1958 she was producing her own designs, of which there are now 122 [and counting.]

Winkle’s innovative geometric patterns were printed in black by semi-automatic rubber-stamping machines, and then hand-coloured before glazing (a ‘stamp & fill’ process) thus allowing the plates to be dishwasher proof. Her funky designs sold in presentation packs aimed at the catalogue and chain store markets and Broadhurst became hugely popular on the back of these popular designs.

Here we have [large plates] ‘Corinth’ introduced in 1965 and ‘Calypso’ [smaller plates] introduced in 1963. As the plates were hand-coloured, there is a slight variation in the colouration, under the standard black outline. I find them quite charming.

And so do many others- the most popular Kathie Winkle designs have been released – by Kathie herself- using modern pottery production techniques. Unfortunately, for me, the charm dissipates with the uniformity of the colouring of these ‘reproduction’ pieces.

I’ve styled the plates together- to give a taste of how these plates might look mounted on a wall. My idea is to have a two each of a dozen or so Kathie Winkle patterns – and fill a wall. Funky!
