Reader’s Digest earth and lunar globes
made in USA, c. 1960s
This Reader’s Digest package from the 60s contains these two globes, and an accompanying Atlas [not photographed, but part of this collection.] The earth globe has a teak base, brass orbiting arms, and the globe has raised mountains. Being the patriotic person that I am, you can see I have turned the globe to showcase Australia. What a continent!
The lunar globe is metal, and sits on a plastic ‘crater’ base [difficult to capture in this image, it’s out of shot]– this globe is inscribed with the [then known] lunar features and the moon landing sites. The lunar globe is [hilariously] way out of scale to the earth globe, but obviously necessarily so.
The lunar globe is a little discoloured in places – it’s had a long hard life due to the fascination we all have with the moon and its places. A must for your 60s library or den!
